Welcome to the Active Travel Champions website

Active Travel Champions are volunteers who help people be more active through walking or cycling for more of their everyday journeys.

Champions give advice about walking and cycling and/or set up walking and cycling activities in their local community, workplace, university or school. They are given a full training programme and resources to enable them to do this and receive support from a Volunteer Coordinator.

Award Winning

Sustrans was recently awarded with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee award for our volunteer programme, this is awarded in

recognition of excellence in voluntary activities carried out by groups in the community.

Anyone can be a champion!

Champions are people who are active or want to be more active. They are enthusiastic and motivated about cycling and walking and can support and encourage others to feel the same. If this sounds like you then please click here for more information.

Meet some champions...

Charlie...

Charlie joined Sustrans in April of 2012. As an enthusiastic advocate of Sustainable Transport, she wants to see further development of safe inner-city cycle routes and to promote understanding and tolerance between different road users.  Charlie is currently developing a student group at one of Cardiff’s universities with the aim of recruiting Champions, organising rides, and promoting Active Travel.

Donna...

Donna has been a really proactive volunteer and is always keen to help out at events whenever she can. Recently she ran an information stand at a new pupil induction evening at the college where she works. There was lots of interest. Staff and pupils mapped their journeys by walking or cycling to school. Donna also encouraged pupils to help out. Donna has recently set up a miles for merits incentive scheme to encourage students to cycle or walk to school.

Luisa...

Luisa is originally from Italy and wanted to combine her work experience as a team leader with her passion for the outdoors by volunteering with Sustrans to lead walks in her local area through Wimbledon and Richmond Park. Luisa promoted the walks to the local community by setting up a stall in the library and talking to people about the benefits of walking.

Lawrie...

A Sustrans Champion and ranger, Lawrie leads Fresh Air Miles rides along National Cycle Network route 246 which he and and fellow South Hampshire rangers helped to develop. Lawrie is looking forward to promoting NCN 246 as a great walking and cycling route, and wants to show people that "you don't have to be super fit to give it a go!"

David...

Being based near the Lea Valley and NCN 1 David wants to show people in the area that safe, traffic free routes are on their doorstep. He leads regular rides from Epping, has taken people to the Olympic Park and is now setting up his own cycling group.
